Spotting Early Signs of Plant Disease

Sometimes it’s obvious that your plants are ailing. You may notice falling leaves or discoloration. However, other signs are more subtle. It’s important to know the early warning signs of plant disease. You can stop the spread in its tracks and work with a professional to rebuild the health of your plants.

Leaf Spots and Lesions

Spots can start out small and grow quickly. They can turn into dead areas that compromise the health of the entire leaf. Look for tan or brown areas that have rings around them that are slightly darker in color. This indicates the presence of a fungal disease.

If you see browning around the edges of leaves, this can indicate pathogens invading leaf margins. There may even be discharge coming out of the affected areas that dries up and leaves behind markings. A professional can take samples of this discharge and test it to determine its origin.

Dark black spots on leaves, especially on maple trees, can indicate the presence of mold. Invasive species of mold can quickly spread throughout an area.

Drooping or Wilting

Wilting can sometimes indicate dryness, but pathogens like fusarium or verticillium may be to blame. By clogging xylem vessels, they can cause limp foliage that is rather sudden. Check the nearby soil to ensure that hydration isn’t an issue. Moist soil and wilting can sometimes indicate the presence of phytophthora, a fungus that impacts plant roots.

Slow Growth

You may see slow plant growth during certain times of the year, especially if drought conditions are present. However, a decrease in growth even in favorable conditions indicates disease or deficiencies in soil quality.

Also, look for new growth that is abnormal. This includes twisted leaves or malformations. If the plant in question produces fruit or flowers, they may look misshapen.

Leaves Falling Off

If leaves are rapidly falling off your plants and it’s not autumn, disease is likely present. A strong indication of disease is if the lower leaves are falling off first. This is an early defense response. If you act quickly, you may be able to eradicate the disease before more leaves fall off.

Humid Conditions Spreading Problems

If humidity levels are high and you notice plant issues quickly spreading and developing, fungus may be an issue. Fungus tends to rapidly multiply when moisture is present. It’s important that you address the issue quickly. Otherwise, the fungus can spread to other nearby plants.
