Tree Removal Aftercare: Preventing Damage to Your Yard

We all like the idea of having a large tree on our property, but there may come a time when that large tree needs to be removed. As necessary as the tree removal may be, it will also affect the rest of your property in ways that you might not expect. Your yard will need to recover after essentially having a large part of it removed, and that takes some time. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to aid in that recovery and prevent too much damage to your property.

1. Lay Down Sod

Sod is mature grass and turf that is available in rolls or squares. It can be laid down on parts of your yard where there is no other growth, such as an area where a tree stump and roots used to be. Laying down rolls or patches of sod is easy and a great way to rebuild a damaged lawn quickly.

2. Remove the Stump

Having a stump remain after a tree is cut down may seem harmless, but it can cause some problems later on if it becomes infested with termites or other pests. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to have a stump removed from your yard safely. If you don’t mind waiting, you can drill holes in the stump and fill them with Epsom salt or potassium nitrate. This will cause the stump to slowly decay to the point where it can be easily dug up or cut away. This method does take at least four weeks to completely remove the stump, but you will be rid of it before it can cause too many problems.

If you want a stump removed from your yard quickly, you can dig around it until you find the roots and cut them away. You should be able to pull the stump out after that. You can also hire a tree removal service to grind down the stump with a stump grinder. Either of these methods will leave a hole or a patch of dirt where the stump once was, so keep that in mind if you want your lawn to look its best.

3. Smooth Your Uneven Lawn

Removing a large tree can leave your yard looking and feeling uneven. You’ll likely have a hole where the tree used to be, and the tree removal process could leave mounds of dirt around your property. If you want to even out your yard, buy some bags of soil and use them to fill in the holes and smooth out the uneven areas. After that, plant grass seed to grow new grass in the patches of dirt or lay down sod if your yard is level enough.
